How to build your own skate ramp!

Emmy Schouten

Have you always dreamed of your own private skatepark? But you just don’t know how to start?Look no further! In this blog, we’ll take you through the steps of how to make a skateboard ramp. It is the first essential piece to your own skate spot. We explain it in just 3 easy steps!

1. Design a blueprint

The first step is to get drawing! Think of the kind of ramp you want. Would you only want to do jumps? Or do you want to add in some stairs? How big do you want it? It is 100% up to you! You can get super creative here. Make sure to think of a realistic budget here. Write down all your measurements in the blueprint. That way you won’t come short when building it ;). Tip: If you are completely lost, check out some blueprints online! You can get some good inspiration there, or even copy one or two things.

2. Get your materials

Make a list with everything you need. Think screws, wood and power tools. If you don’t have your own tools, you can rent them or ask your friends nicely ;). Some must-haves for building are: protective gear, a screwdriver and hammer, woodcutting tools, and a drill. The amount of wood, nails and screws varies per design. Look it up in your blueprint. Buy some extras for possible building errors. Common used materials are plywood, masonite and skatelite. These are essential for a strong curve! You can either put your ramp in an indoor skatepark or leave it outdoors. Use wood oil to preserve your ramp from the rain outside.

3. Start building

A) Cut out the sides of the ramp

Start with the outline of your design. Draw the sides of the ramp like in the blueprint on your chosen wood. Cut out the shape of your design. You can use a jigsaw or other woodcutting tools. Make sure to be precise! Otherwise it will be like skateboarding on the Tower of Pisa ;). A tip: stack your wood to make the two sides of the ramps in one go! That way you have less work to do and the measurements of the sides will be the exact same.

B) Build the back-frame and support

Now you build the back of your ramp. This will determine the height of your ramp. Your back-frame will be the highest point. It is the straight-part from which you can drop in. Make sure to get everything super leveled here. Put in plenty of nails and screws. It is better to put in one too many than too few! Once your back-frame is ready, create the support. This support is attached to the back-frame. You add 2 planks diagonally to your frame. It will create a almost triangle like shaped. Your back-frame is still the highest point, with 2 diagonal planks attached reaching the ground. This extra wood will hold your back-frame in place. That way you can easily push off the ramp for some speed.

C) Create supports for the surface

Add in some support for your top layer. Here you add planks in between the 2 sides from step A, on the opposite side of the back frame. This will be the front side of your ramp. You can layer the wooden planks like a staircase. Line these planks up vertically like on the picture. The wood will make the ramp sturdy. Make sure they all flow evenly together.

D) Put on the surface

Here your ramp will come together! Put on flexible pieces of wood on the front side of the ramp. Grab your wooden sheets and place them on top of the frame you built. You can use plywood underneath. This is the first sheet you will put on the frame. Use something like masonite or skatelite on top of that. These will bend perfectly for your ramp. Together these will create a strong ramp. Oil the wood up for a smooth and long-lasting ride ;).
